The rock at Løvøya is the famous Permian magmatic rock nepheline syenite. Slow cooling and subsequent crystallization, allowed large crystals to form from the melt.
The result is a coarse grained variety of the nepheline syneite, a pegmatite, which may contain rare minerals.
At Løvøya you can see the world’s type locality for thorite and the element thorium. All thorium has been removed from the site, due to mining.
